Reid Kerr College
Reid Kerr College in Glasgow have recently undergone major redevelopment and chose SYNERGY Radio Broadcasting facilities for their HNC course in Radio Broadcasting.
Previously, students on this course were forced to use facilities at a nearby community radio station. However with the construction of a new and modernised building they now have everything they need on site, which includes facilities for both learning and leisure such as a hair and beauty salon, a gym and a fitness suite. All with a state-of-the-art student radio facility nicely slotted in alongside.
Their SYNERGY system was installed at the beginning of academic year 2005/2006 and has been used throughout the year by the students on the Radio course as well as a training suite to familiarise course deliverers with the equipment. It was also used as a recruitment tool to encourage students to apply for courses at Reid Kerr College.
Reid Kerr is hoping to begin its own student radio station, becoming an integral part of the college and everyday student life. It will include a variety of music and talk content, act as a showcase of student work and provide a student forum. This will also provide students with the opportunity to present their own shows and develop a loyal following within the student community.
“When the college was being re-rebuilt, we wanted to include a radio facility of our own. The radio broadcasting course is very important to the college and by having ownership of facilities it lets us explore the medium and expand it within the radio course and Reid Kerr College as a whole.”

The Media Department are aiming at becoming a ‘Centre of Excellence in Radio’ in partnership with skillset - www.skillset.org - the sector skills council for the audiovisual industries. And will forge good links and partnerships with other colleges and local radio stations. The college will also be offering the Diversity Project, funded by the European Social Fund, which encourages older adults and minority groups into radio based employment.
“If anyone else was looking at upgrading their studio’s and were looking at SYNERGY I would say do it; you can’t lose.”
