School radio on FM - First in the UK

IT is the opportunity of a lifetime for any budding radio star.

Queensferry High School has been chosen to be the home of a professional, full-time FM station – 107.6 Jubilee 1 – the first and only school in the UK to boast such an asset.
It means students will be offered the chance to try their hand at broadcasting, producing or technically assisting shows.
Jubilee 1 set up its studios in the school earlier this month, and by the autumn it is expected to have abandoned its online broadcasts for an FM spot, after recently being granted Ofcom approval.
The station is the brainchild of journalist and broadcaster Charles Fletcher, who has been running Jubilee 1 part-time from South Queensferry's Roseberry Hall since 2002.
He is joined by a five-man team of professionals who run the station full-time and other Jubilee facilities, including a Holyrood studio.
The decision to move to the high school came about after students who had volunteered with the station were desperate for it to become a permanent fixture in the community.
Mr Fletcher said: "The idea was put to me and I liked it. Discussions then took place with the school and the council, and eventually, two years later, here we are."
Students, staff and parents are encouraged to take a lead role, nonetheless, with ideas for how broadcasting and radio techniques could compliment curriculum projects already being drawn up. For those students who were not previously involved with Jubilee 1 at its former home, the opportunity is being quickly snapped up.
Headteacher Robert Birch said: "I am absolutely delighted to house the station and to be the only school in the UK to have one.
"I think there is so much more to come as well, particularly when we hit FM. I am sure we will gain confidence and people will come forward with ideas for how the station can develop."
Student Lewis Easton, 15, added: "Being involved has been a great learning experience for me and presenting live on air has boosted my confidence.
"I will continue to present and improve my skills and hopefully training will allow me to take broadcasting further in the future."
Jubilee 1 broadcasts to listeners across Edinburgh, Fife and West Lothian. Shows include news, discussion, music and entertainment.
