Creative Media Diploma at the Tresham Institute

“Teaching radio broadcasting has never been easier or more rewarding”, Course Leader for the BTEC National Diploma in Media, Nigel Vernon-Dier explains.

Synergy seems to fully understand what is required within academia and has produced an all-encompassing studio package that will give my students the extra advantage when progressing into higher levels of study or directly into the industry.  At Tresham Institute, we are helping the future pioneers within media, carving a path for others to follow.

With over seven years experience as a producer and presenter for the BBC, I know how demanding the radio industry can be. Prospective employers within the industry are seeking talented intakes with not only the academic and journalistic skills but also practical experience already in place.

Having Synergy  will help to satisfy both requirements.  ‘There are more people working in the media today than in any other industry’ (source: EDEXCEL 2007), and having student radio is seen as an excellent recruitment pool by many of the major broadcast companies. The existence of an operational radio studio would be a huge incentive for choosing to study at any given establishment and Tresham Institute has embraced this opportunity.

The BTEC National Diploma, Certificate and Award offer plenty of scope to fully utilise our new studio, and units ranging from ‘Understanding the Radio Industry’, ‘Scriptwriting for Radio’, ‘News Production for Radio’ and ‘Music Based Programming’, give students a chance to put what they have learnt into practice.

The new Creative and Media Diploma looks set to break the mould on traditional courses of study and I envisage that our new radio suite will be highly sought after by many faculties here at the college.  Focusing on creativity, process and skills the new qualification works flexibly, tailoring to the institutions strengths across a diverse sector.
